Tangy Mill

Tangy Mill was built around 1820 and used masonry quarried from Kilkivan. It stands on the North side of Tangy Burn, near the point where it enters the sea. The trust acquired the mill in 1973 from Mr McConnachie, the last miller, and rennovation started in 1979.

Finding Tangy Mill:

Located in Argyll near the West coast of Kintyre and about 7 miles north-west of Campbeltown. Follow the A83 through Lochgilphead (good for petrol and shops) and Tarbert, signed to Campbeltown. Keep following the road until you go through Bellochantuy then a few miles later take a turn off to the left which should be signed Tangy. Go up a steep hill with hairpin bend and then follow on to a bridge and phonebox. You should see the mill ahead of you. Turn left then take the first right at the Tangy sign and right again.
Nearest airports are Glasgow Airport or you can fly on to Campbeltown Airport (near Machrihanish).

Approach,

The Mill,

Taking a walk up to Tangy Loch ...

showing the wind farm, farm and finally Tangy Loch. Allow about 2 hours to walk up to the Loch and back. There is a map at the mill which you can borrow and take with you, we would recommend that you wear practical footwear such as walking boots. When you get to the farm you will see a sign pointing to the right for the Loch, what you need to do is keep the farm on your left but you do need to cut across the farmyard. Please be careful and considerate as this is a real working farm (we had to edge our way through a heard of cows). You then progress up the path to a small woodland. As you come out of the woodland there is a track to the right and you should be at the Loch.

Top Loft,

Middle Loft

and twin room. The property can sleep 6 people in one double and two twin rooms but only has a single bathroom. The kiln room is very spacious but can be hard to heat, even with the granny sealed off. You will have the sound of the water flowing past in the burn.
Bottom Loft,

Showing kitchen, stairs down to the kiln with electrics panel, mill machinery and views of the main accomodation area. The smoke detectors have a reputation for being over sensitive but we did not have any problem. There has been a tradition to leave small gifts hidden in the machinery for the next set of guests to find so don't forget to check and then replenish.
