Astbury Models - Static - J Class Yacht

The Purchase

By popular request we will be showing the process of trying to build this model. The model kit is made by Amati of the 130 foot J Class sloop Endeavour, first launched in 1934. It is a 1:80 scale model which brings the model length to 48cm and height 70cm.

The Kit

This kit, code 1700-10, is sold as a starter kit and includes some basic tools.

The instructions are detailed but in Italian, although luckily there is a supplement with an English translation of the main steps. The picture below shows what Amati expect it to look like finished!

The Build

Progress over weekend one:

The work bench and close up of the hull structure being formed.

And a close up of some drill bits purchased, note the 5p coin for scale! Ideally these need to be mounted in a pin vice, which took me a little time to realise and then get one.
Progress over weekend two:

Close up of the completed hull structure showing stern detail. Deck pieces on and trial of mast location.

Dremel arrived, I had this for some precision drilling but had realised the pin vice was in fact the route to go.

I was a little unclear on how to approach the hull planking so opted for some reading first, with the very good:
